In the fifteenth century it was known as the beautiful Estella and today remains true to this adage: it is a medieval city that over the years has treasured palaces, mansions, churches, convents, bridges and beautiful buildings that have make it earn the nickname of the northern Toledo.

The city has about 13,000 residents and surprises for its comercial activity and for the love of music and culture as well as impeccable cuisine where prevail the products of this region: Estella Lands, many of them with certificate of origin. On a walk through Estella-Lizarra you come across with pilgrims and visitors hungry for knowledge about the old streets where Navarre, Franks and Jews lived together, and you will see that it the phrase said by Aymeric Picaud in the eleventh century still applies: Estella is a city of good bread, good wine, lots of meat and fish and all kinds of happiness.

But Estella-Lizarra is not only history and art, it is also pure nature and landscape: you can stroll through the park of Los Llanos, surrounded by the river Ega, or the path of Vasco Navarro Railway or the well nourished network of walking trails in the area, to then cool off in Agua Salada, a natural pool with medicinal properties located in one of the banks of the river.

The Church of Saint Mary of Eunate is from the 12th century. Due to its octagonal plan, the first theories stated that Eunate was a Templar church, related to other central plan churches like the Templar convent of Tomar, the Temple Church of London or the Holy Sepulchre of Pisa, all of them inspired by the Church of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. This alleged Templar origin and the aura of mystery that surrounds the church have contributed to esoteric interpretations.

The name „Eunate” comes from the Basque for “a hundred gates” and refers to the arches that surround this ancient hermitage.

We offer you guided tours and of course bikes if you need to relax your feet.

Enjoy this lovely place close to our Albergue – a few picture teasers of Eunate below.

Roncesvalles service

This new service is aimed at customers who come to Pamplona with intention to begin the Camino from Roncesvalles.

We host the pilgrim in the hostel that night and organize the transportation to Roncesvalles where the journey begins. Back at Pamplona the pilgrim stays in our hostel again that night.

We call it the Roncesvalles pack and prices have to be consulted as they depend on the number of people interested.

The hostel is just at the entrance of the old town of Pamplona, historic area, cathedral, town hall, route of the run of the bulls, etc.

Camino passes right by the door just after accessing the city through the gates of the wall. We do not have to strive to find it and we will be in the center of the city.

Right next to the hotel there is an excellent bicycle shop in which we can make the adjustements we consider necessary for the path that lies ahead until Santiago, which at this point is a lot.

Villava-Atarrabia is surely the town of Iruñerria with more development to The City. With a privileged environment because of the crossing of its 3 Caminos at the mouth of Ultzama river to Arga river, Villava-Atarrabia was a preferred resting place for the wealthy people of Pamplona 100 years ago; and thus witness the main avenue leading into the village, with its belle epoque chalets and its special Besta-Jira.

Villava- Atarrabia was meant to live, to rest. And the people there are those who interpret it better. Villaveses can go every day to work in Pamplona or its industrial belt, but they live in their village. Not surprisingly Villava-Atarrabia has developed an important staff letter of health, educational, social, cultural and sporting services to reach a widely recognized quality life.

The hostel of Villava-Atarrabia is part of that staff letter, and is designed for hostellers and the pilgrim; youth hostel and families; groups and sports teams. For those who devote the day to explore, discover, enjoy Pamplona-Iruña and its region, and the night to rest. It is a first class hostel with first class facilities.

"In the Basque Country, Camino de Santiago crosses a remarkable mountain called Puerto de Cize ... To pass it, there are eight miles both up and down. Indeed, this mountain is so high that it seems to touch the sky; those doing the climb think they are able to touch the sky in their own hand..."

Similarly to the quote above, but of course in Latin, the French monk Aimery Picaud, described this stage in the first Pilgrim's Guide ever written, and that was in the year 1135!

Millions of pilgrims later, the mountain is in the same place and the pilgrim is confronted with it when crossing to Roncesvalles. We must not close our eyes, the stage is serious with its 27 km and 1200 m of altitude. But we are there to prepare it with you, discuss it and thus help to transform this legendary stage in a great and wonderful time!

The day before departure
